Subject: Immediate Review and Change Needed in Elk Ridge Deer Policy

Dear State Legislators, Elk Ridge City Council Members, and Mayor,

As a resident of Elk Ridge and/or a concerned wildlife lover, I am deeply troubled by the ongoing deer euthanasia program in our city. This plan appears to be based on input from fewer than 25 residents—less than 1% of our population of over 6,000—and lacks the broad support such a decision demands. Many of us chose Elk Ridge for its natural setting and the presence of wildlife like deer. This program feels deeply out of step with the values of this community.

Even more concerning are the conflicting statements made by city leadership:

• Mayor Haddock claimed the program only targets “sick and underweight” deer, and that healthy animals caught would be safely released.

• Meanwhile, Council Member Jared Peterson stated that the city already has a list of people to receive donated venison from the deer being killed—directly contradicting the Mayor’s statement.

• It’s also publicly documented that Council Member Peterson is associated with a construction company, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest as the city continues to expand into deer habitat.

These inconsistencies create an atmosphere of mistrust and leave residents wondering whether this program truly serves the public good. While I am not accusing anyone of wrongdoing, the lack of transparency and accountability in how this policy was developed and is being implemented raises legitimate concerns.

I urge you to:

• Pause the current program.

• Open public discussion with all residents.

• Explore non-lethal alternatives such as relocation and sterilization, in partnership with wildlife experts.

Please treat this matter with the seriousness and urgency it deserves. The reputation of our city and the wellbeing of our local ecosystem depend on it.
